Indications

List the clinical indications for performing the first trimester POCUS examination

Acquisition

  • Select correct transducer
  • Discuss scanning preparations
  • Demonstrate the first trimester POCUS examination
  • Identify key normal sonographic findings 

Interpretation

  • Identify sonographic findings of the female pelvis
  • Identify sonographic findings of a normal intrauterine pregnancy
  • Identify sonographic findings of free intraperitoneal fluid in the pelvis and in Morison's pouch
  • Discuss POCUS examination limitations
  • Define: pregnancy of unknown location and pregnancy of unknown viability
  • Identify sonographic findings of pregnancy failure

He founded multiple residency POCUS programs, created the Ohio ACEP ultrasound course, and served as ACEP Ultrasound Section Chair.

Dr. Jones lectures worldwide, has written numerous POCUS articles and chapters, co-chairs system-wide POCUS at MetroHealth, and leads the living anatomy/ultrasound program for pre-clerkship students.

Dr. Mount is a POCUS-fellowship trained intensivist in Tacoma, Washington, and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University.

She honed her expertise in education and curriculum development as core faculty for Madigan Army Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Residency and as ICU Clinical Education Director.

After retiring from the US Army in 2023, she joined the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Ultrasound Course Committee and now teaches their Adult Ultrasound Course. Her special interest lies in leveraging POCUS in resource-limited and austere environments.
